Base Camp, All Nations DC’s Men’s Ministry, will hold its first-ever barbecue at Sycamore Island. Come at 4:30pm if you can to swim and hang out. BBQ and meeting to start at 6:30pm.
The name “Base Camp” comes from the concept of the role of base camps in mountain climbing. As climbers reach new elevations it’s important for them to take a pause to rest and to renew their strength while they acclimatize to their new elevation and prepare for the next stage of their climb. It’s also a place for them to interact with others to learn from those who have been on the paths ahead and to relate to and encourage others in their climbs.
Sycamore Island is a one-of-a kind place in DC. It’s a small island in the Potomac River that you access by a small ferry near Glen Echo in MD. There is one parking lot on MacArthur Blvd. and one on the Clara Barton Parkway. Important: from 2:15 to 7:00pm you can only access the Clara Barton Parkway parking lot if you are coming from downtown DC or Georgetown heading northwest, as the Clara Barton Parkway is one way at that time. More detailed directions can be found here.
The footpaths from both parking lots converge at a bluff looking down over the Potomac River and Sycamore Island. The path then leads down the slope to an old steel bridge over the C&O Canal, and on to the canal’s towpath. Shortly up ahead on the towpath you will find steps leading down into the river and ropes going over to Sycamore Island. Yanking on one of the ropes rings a cowbell on the Island to alert those on the island that you need a ferry ride.
ANDC will provide all food and beverages. However, if you would like to help out with getting and transporting provisions, please contact Wright. Also, it is important for us to give a headcount to the caretaker at Sycamore Island, so please let Wright know if you can come by sending him an e-mail.
